A local-first Splitwise alternative

If you want the familiar idea of splitting bills with friends while keeping a local ledger, Trip Ledger offers a browser-based alternative. No account is needed. Trip Ledger is an independent project and is not affiliated with Splitwise.

Does it work offline?

Yes, after the app has loaded and cached on your device. You can add expenses and view locally saved balances offline. Opening it for the first time requires a connection. Sharing and syncing need a reachable peer; opening an invitation also requires an online owner to approve your device.

Where is my expense data stored?

Your expense ledger stays in browser storage on your devices, rather than a server database. Group devices exchange ledger data peer-to-peer. Clearing site data or losing your device can erase your local copy, so export backups and keep group devices synced.

Can I add an expense by voice or receipt?

Use browser dictation to describe a bill and review the prefilled expense. English phrase rules work without downloading an AI model. When a compatible browser AI model is already available, the app can use it to interpret the text. Browser dictation itself may use your browser provider’s servers. Receipt images are processed with OCR on your device; OCR resources may need an initial download.

A Web 2.0 app with local storage

Open Trip Ledger in your browser on desktop or mobile, or install it as a progressive web app. Use light or dark mode, share groups through revocable invitations and give members owner, editor or viewer access.

Before you begin

This app is for entertainment and education. Review all splits and conversions before relying on them. Browser storage is not a guaranteed backup.
